The tool has been produced in three formats:
o Online e-learning tool
o CD ROM – this is the same as the online tool and allows access for those who cannot access the internet
o Workbook – this is a copy of all the materials in print format, for those who do not have access to electronic learning tools, or are not confident using such a tool
How to use the tools
The worker/volunteer and line manager should agree which version is to be used, and the line manager should ensure work is completed. The work can be:
o Completed in a single block. This should take up to three hours.
o Completed in sections
If it is felt that completing all the material is unnecessary, the manager can identify the relevant sections for the worker/volunteer to complete. The material can be done individually or in a small group, which will allow for discussion.
The e-learning tool and CD-ROM are interactive with a mouse. The learner can move through a series of topics, which are listed on the seven headings at the top of the page.
Each topic has a series of sections, listed in a box on the right hand side of the page. At the end of each topic is a quiz. The answers to the quiz can be found here.
The print can be enlarged, and the introduction to each topic can be read out, using the buttons at the bottom right hand side of the screen.
The very top banner of the e-learning tool and CD-ROM contains two headings: Resource & Glossary. By clicking on Resources, the learner is given a list of documents mentioned in the main part of the learning tool. By clicking on Glossary, the viewer is given an explanation of some commonly used terms or processes.
When the agreed material has been completed, the line manager can give the worker a certificate.
In terms of Professional Development, knowledge can be claimed under Unit HSC 33 and HSC 34/35 Contributing to the Protection of Individuals. The CD-Rom will also build a knowledge base for the HNC link to SVQ.
